A detailed natural history study of two mice by Flemish master Joris Hoefnagel, executed in 1594 on vellum with precise, delicate brushwork.
Joris Hoefnagel was a central figure in the transition from medieval manuscript illumination to the scientific naturalism of the late sixteenth century. This work, dated 1594, demonstrates his meticulous approach to animal portraiture. The composition features two mice on a wooden surface, accompanied by a discarded nut shell and a piece of candle. Hoefnagel uses fine brushwork to render the texture of the rodents' fur, their whiskers, and the grain of the wood beneath them.
The inclusion of Latin inscriptions at the top and bottom of the frame reflects the humanist tradition of the period, where natural observations were frequently paired with moral or philosophical aphorisms. The text, 'Mus non uni fidit antro' (A mouse does not trust in one hole), suggests a didactic purpose behind the visual study. Hoefnagel was known for his contributions to the 'Mira Calligraphiae Monumenta', and his ability to combine calligraphic precision with biological accuracy is evident here.
This piece is executed on vellum, a medium that allowed for the high level of detail required for such small-scale subjects. The palette remains grounded in natural earth tones, with soft greys and browns defining the mice, set against a pale, wooden background. The lighting is even, avoiding dramatic shadows to ensure the viewer focuses on the anatomical features of the subjects. Hoefnagel's work represents a bridge between the decorative traditions of the past and the emerging interest in empirical observation that would define the coming century of Dutch and Flemish art. His attention to the mundane details of daily life, such as the gnawed candle, provides a glimpse into the domestic environment of the late Renaissance.
