Twee meisjes doen een pop in bad - Nelly Spoor

A charming ink illustration by Nelly Spoor depicting two young girls bathing a doll in a cosy nursery setting.

This charming ink illustration by Dutch artist Nelly Spoor captures a domestic scene of childhood play. The composition centres on two young girls engaged in the ritual of bathing a doll, a subject that reflects the gentle, observational nature of early twentieth-century children's book illustration. Spoor employs a clean, linear style, using varying line weights to define the figures, the small bathtub, and the surrounding nursery furnishings.

The interior is rendered with a focus on narrative detail. A jester-like puppet hangs on the wall, while a small bed with a patterned canopy occupies the background, suggesting a cosy, lived-in space. The artist uses solid black areas for the curtains and the girls' clothing to create visual balance against the lighter, open spaces of the room. The perspective is slightly flattened, a common characteristic of illustrative work from this period, which allows the viewer to focus on the interaction between the two children and their toy.

Spoor, who was active in the Netherlands during the early to mid-twentieth century, often produced work that resonated with the aesthetic sensibilities of the time, favouring clear outlines and expressive characterisation. This piece is a fine example of her ability to convey a sense of quiet activity and innocence through minimal means. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, preserving the crispness of the original ink lines and the subtle textures of the paper. It is an ideal addition for those who appreciate the history of illustration or who wish to add a touch of nostalgic, classic charm to a room.
