A detailed engraving by Jan Dam Steuerwald documenting two commemorative medals of the historic Beurs van Hendrik de Keyser in Amsterdam.
This engraving by Jan Dam Steuerwald documents two commemorative medals struck to honour the Beurs van Hendrik de Keyser in Amsterdam. The original building, designed by the architect Hendrik de Keyser in the early seventeenth century, functioned as the city's stock exchange. It was a structure of significant architectural and economic importance to the Dutch Golden Age, serving as a hub for international trade and commerce.
Steuerwald, a Dutch engraver, captures the obverse and reverse sides of these medals with precision. The composition presents the circular forms against a clean, neutral background, allowing the viewer to examine the relief work and inscriptions. One medal features an architectural rendering of the exchange building itself, while the other displays allegorical figures, a common motif in nineteenth-century commemorative numismatics. The text on the medals provides historical context, referencing the legacy of the structure and its role in the mercantile life of Amsterdam.
Technically, the work demonstrates the fine line-work characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century printmaking. Steuerwald uses subtle shading to suggest the three-dimensional quality of the metal surfaces, creating a sense of depth within the flat medium. The print serves as a record of both the physical medals and the historical building, which was eventually demolished in the nineteenth century. By preserving these images, Steuerwald maintains a visual link to the architectural history of Amsterdam. The print is an example of how historical documentation and artistic craft intersected during this period, providing a clear view of objects that might otherwise be lost to time. It is a piece for those interested in Dutch history, numismatics, and the evolution of urban architecture.
