A fine etching by Pieter van Avont featuring two mirrored putti, demonstrating the artist's skill in anatomical form and classical composition.
This etching by the Flemish artist Pieter van Avont depicts two putti, or infant angels, positioned in a mirrored arrangement. Van Avont was a painter and etcher based in Antwerp, recognised for his frequent collaborations with other masters of the period. His work often features these small, cherubic figures, which appear in both his religious compositions and his mythological scenes.
The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical form and gentle movement. Each angel is shown in profile, with arms raised and wings extended, creating a sense of balanced symmetry. The etching technique allows for subtle shading across the rounded forms of the children, providing a sense of volume and weight despite the simplicity of the composition. The lines are precise, capturing the soft texture of the hair and the delicate structure of the wings.
Van Avont was active during the height of the Flemish Baroque, a period that valued the integration of human figures into larger, often decorative, settings. While these figures are presented here as a study, they reflect the broader interest in classical motifs that permeated European art at the time. The mirror-image composition suggests this may have been a preparatory design or a decorative print intended for a wider audience. The work demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency in printmaking, specifically his ability to convey character and anatomy through minimal, controlled marks on the copper plate. This piece provides a clear view into the stylistic preferences of the seventeenth-century Antwerp school, where the depiction of putti became a signature element of the artist's output.
