A dynamic Baroque study by Giovanni Battista Gaulli, capturing a celestial vision of light and shadow in preparation for his famous Roman ceiling fresco.
This work by Giovanni Battista Gaulli, known as Il Baciccio, functions as a preparatory study for his celebrated ceiling fresco in the Church of the Gesù in Rome. The composition demonstrates the characteristic energy of the Roman Baroque period, where the boundaries between architecture and painting dissolve to create a sense of infinite space. Gaulli was a close associate of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and this piece reflects the influence of the sculptor's dramatic approach to light and movement.
The painting depicts a celestial vision, with the monogram of Christ, IHS, radiating light at the centre. Figures of saints and angels occupy the clouds, arranged in a dynamic, swirling motion that draws the eye upward. Below this heavenly assembly, darker, more chaotic forms represent the forces of shadow and earthly struggle. The contrast between the luminous upper register and the murky, shadowed lower section creates a clear hierarchy of spiritual ascension.
Gaulli employs a sophisticated use of colour to guide the viewer through the narrative. The golden light emanating from the centre provides a warm, ethereal glow that illuminates the surrounding figures, while the deeper, earthy tones at the base ground the composition. The brushwork is fluid and expressive, capturing the fleeting nature of the clouds and the weight of the figures with equal precision. This study provides insight into the artist's process, showing how he balanced complex theological themes with the technical demands of large-scale decorative painting. The work remains a primary example of the theatricality inherent in seventeenth-century Italian art, where the aim was to overwhelm the senses and inspire awe through the manipulation of perspective and light.
