A delicate woodblock print from the 1788 series 'True Depictions of Bird and Flower Pictures' by Ukiyo-e master Kitao Shigemasa.
This woodblock print originates from the illustrated book 'Kachōe shashin zui' (True Depictions of Bird and Flower Pictures), published in 1788. Kitao Shigemasa, a prominent figure in the Ukiyo-e tradition, demonstrates his mastery of the kachō-ga genre, which focuses on the observation of birds and flowers. The composition spans two pages, presenting a balanced arrangement of avian subjects and botanical elements.
On the left, two birds rest upon a flowering cherry branch. The artist employs delicate line work to define the texture of the feathers and the structure of the blossoms. On the right, a third bird is captured in flight, its wings spread to suggest movement. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy provides context to the species and the setting, integrating text with the visual narrative. The printing technique relies on subtle tonal variations, avoiding heavy ink saturation to maintain a sense of lightness and naturalism.
Shigemasa was known for his versatility and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through precise, economical strokes. This work reflects the Edo period interest in natural history and the aesthetic appreciation of seasonal changes. The print serves as a record of the period's artistic approach to nature, where observation and stylisation coexist. The paper retains the aged quality of an original book plate, with the monochrome palette emphasising the clarity of the line work. This piece offers a glimpse into the technical skill required for late eighteenth-century Japanese book illustration, where the harmony between negative space and subject matter remains a primary concern for the artist.
