Jean-Baptiste Joseph Pater, a student of Antoine Watteau, produced this work during the height of the French Rococo period. The composition depicts a military encampment or a column of soldiers in transit, a subject that allowed the artist to explore the intersection of military life and the pastoral tradition. Unlike the grand, heroic depictions of war common in the era, Pater focuses on the anecdotal details of the march: the weary figures, the pack animals, and the domestic clutter that accompanies a moving regiment.
