Cornelis Norbertus Gysbrechts was a master of the Dutch and Flemish Baroque tradition of trompe l'oeil, a style designed to deceive the eye into perceiving a two-dimensional surface as a three-dimensional reality. This work presents a letter rack, a common motif in seventeenth-century studio painting, where various objects are tucked behind red ribbons stretched across a wooden board. The composition includes a violin, a hunting horn, a quill, and numerous letters, all rendered with precise attention to texture and light.

The most striking element is the large, dark green curtain that hangs across the upper left portion of the board. By partially obscuring the items behind it, Gysbrechts creates a sense of depth and physical presence. The folds of the fabric are painted with subtle gradations of shadow, suggesting weight and volume. The inclusion of an almanac and personal correspondence adds a layer of narrative, inviting the viewer to imagine the owner of these items.

Gysbrechts served as a court painter in Copenhagen, where he produced many such illusionistic works for the royal cabinet of curiosities. His technical ability allowed him to manipulate perspective and shadow to blur the boundary between the painted image and the physical space occupied by the viewer. The objects appear to rest against the board, casting soft shadows that reinforce the illusion.
