An eighteenth-century French engraving depicting a hunting trophy, featuring a fox, horn, and musket, after a design by Christophe Huet.
This engraving, titled Trofee met vos en jachthoorn, belongs to the tradition of the hunting trophy print, a genre that gained popularity in eighteenth-century France. The composition features a fox suspended by its hind legs, intertwined with a hunting horn, a musket, and a powder flask. These elements are bound together by a ribbon, creating a vertical arrangement that balances the organic form of the animal with the rigid geometry of the hunting equipment.
The work displays the technical precision characteristic of the period. The engraver employs varied line weights to distinguish between the textures of the fox fur, the metallic sheen of the horn, and the wooden stock of the musket. The composition is clean and focused, typical of decorative prints intended for use as models by craftsmen or as collectors' items for those interested in the culture of the hunt. The inclusion of the hunting horn and firearm suggests the aristocratic associations of the chase, which was a common subject for artists working under the patronage of the French nobility.
Jacques Chéreau, a member of a prominent family of engravers, produced this work after a design by Christophe Huet. Huet was well-known for his depictions of animals and his contributions to the decorative arts, particularly in the chinoiserie and hunting genres. The collaboration between the designer and the engraver results in a print that is both descriptive and ornamental. The work captures the specific details of the equipment while maintaining a sense of balance and order. It provides a clear view of the tools and spoils associated with the hunt, presented with the clarity and refinement expected of eighteenth-century French printmaking.
