A detailed Northern Renaissance triptych depicting Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child, flanked by panels showing hermits and religious figures.
This triptych is a characteristic example of early sixteenth-century Netherlandish painting. The central panel depicts Saint Christopher wading through water, carrying the Christ Child upon his shoulders. The artist employs a narrative approach, incorporating various details such as ships in the background and a hermit observing from a rocky outcrop. The figure of the saint is rendered with a sense of movement, his red drapery caught in the wind as he navigates the river.
The side panels expand the iconographic programme. The left wing shows a saint in contemplation before a crucifix, accompanied by a lion, while the right wing presents a hermit reading, surrounded by various figures and creatures in a rocky setting. The composition reflects the Northern Renaissance interest in combining religious subjects with precise, observational detail. The treatment of the water, the shells on the riverbank, and the distant architectural elements demonstrates the technical skill associated with the workshops of the period.
The Master of the Magdalen Legend is an anonymous painter active in Brussels during the early sixteenth century. The name derives from a series of panels depicting the life of Mary Magdalene. This triptych displays the stylistic traits of the group, including a specific approach to facial features and the integration of figures into expansive, detailed settings. The work provides insight into the devotional practices and artistic conventions of the time, where the inclusion of small, curious details often complemented the primary religious narrative. The use of oil on oak panel allows for the fine application of colour and the subtle transitions of light across the figures and the environment.
