Sheng Mou was a professional painter active during the Yuan Dynasty, known for his technical proficiency and his ability to synthesise the styles of earlier masters. This work, Travelers in Autumn Mountains, exemplifies the shan shui (mountain and water) tradition, where the natural world serves as a vehicle for philosophical reflection. The composition follows a vertical progression, guiding the eye from the foreground, where small figures traverse a path, up towards the towering, craggy peaks that dominate the upper register.
