This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Totsuka, a stop along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. Hokusai produced this series during the early nineteenth century, capturing the daily life of travellers and the specific geography of the route. The composition features a group of figures walking along a path, their attire and posture suggesting the fatigue of a long journey. To the right, a large, serene image of a Buddha head appears in the upper corner, a common motif in Hokusai's work that provides a spiritual counterpoint to the mundane activities of the travellers below.
