A precise architectural floor plan by Walter Gropius for the unbuilt Total Theatre project, showcasing his innovative vision for a flexible, circular performance space.
This architectural drawing illustrates the ambitious vision of Walter Gropius for the Total Theatre, a project commissioned by the director Erwin Piscator in 1926. Gropius, the founder of the Bauhaus, sought to dissolve the traditional separation between the stage and the audience. His design utilised a flexible, circular auditorium that could be reconfigured to suit various performance requirements, including a proscenium stage, a central arena, or a thrust stage.
The floor plan displays the geometric precision characteristic of Gropius's approach to functionalist design. The circular structure is organised around a central axis, with the 'tiefenbühne' (recessed stage) highlighted in a soft wash of colour to denote its specific spatial function. The lines are clean and technical, reflecting the Bauhaus ethos where form follows function. By removing the rigid boundaries of the conventional theatre, Gropius aimed to create a space that could accommodate the experimental, politically charged productions favoured by Piscator.
Although the project was never constructed, the plans remain a significant document of modernist architectural theory. The drawing demonstrates the application of industrial logic to cultural spaces, prioritising versatility and the integration of technology. The use of simple geometric shapes and clear labelling provides a direct insight into the planning process of the era. This print offers a view into the conceptual rigour of the Bauhaus period, capturing a moment where architecture and performance art intersected to imagine new possibilities for public engagement. The composition is balanced and rational, presenting a clear spatial logic that remains relevant to contemporary architectural discourse.
