A woodblock print from the Tōkei Picture Album by Ogura Tōkei, featuring a figure and horses rendered in a traditional ink-wash style.
This print originates from the Tōkei gafu, fusatsu, a supplementary volume of woodblock-printed designs by the Japanese artist Ogura Tōkei. Active during the late Edo period, Tōkei produced works that reflect the aesthetic values of the literati tradition, or bunjinga, which drew inspiration from Chinese painting techniques and subject matter. The composition displays a figure alongside horses, rendered with the economy of line characteristic of traditional brush-and-ink studies.
The image demonstrates a focus on calligraphic line quality, where the artist uses varying pressure to define the contours of the figures and the musculature of the animals. The background remains largely empty, a common convention in Japanese print culture that directs the viewer to the essential forms of the subject. The paper retains its aged, warm tone, typical of woodblock prints from this era, providing a neutral ground for the black ink lines. The inclusion of vertical text columns and seals indicates the work's function as part of a larger instructional or illustrative album, intended for study or appreciation by those interested in classical painting styles.
Ogura Tōkei was known for his ability to translate the fluidity of brushwork into the medium of the woodblock. This particular print captures the interaction between human and animal, a recurring theme in East Asian art that explores the relationship between the domestic and the natural world. The lack of heavy shading or complex colour palettes allows the viewer to focus on the precision of the draughtsmanship. This piece is an example of the technical skill required to maintain the spontaneity of a sketch within the constraints of a carved block. It provides a window into the artistic practices of the period, where the reproduction of masterly sketches allowed for a wider dissemination of stylistic techniques among students and collectors.
