A detailed nineteenth-century engraving depicting the biblical scene of Tobit performing a burial, presented in a classical oval composition.
This fine art print depicts a scene from the Book of Tobit, a narrative found in the deuterocanonical texts. The composition centres on the act of piety performed by Tobit, who risks his life to bury the bodies of his fellow Israelites in defiance of the Assyrian authorities. The artist, Johann Martin Friedrich Geissler, employs a classical approach to the subject, framing the narrative within an oval vignette that draws the eye towards the central figures.
The setting is defined by architectural ruins and dense foliage, which provide a sense of historical weight and solemnity. Geissler uses precise line work to distinguish the textures of the crumbling stone columns from the organic forms of the trees. The light source appears to emanate from the horizon, casting soft shadows across the foreground and creating a sense of depth within the circular frame. The figures are rendered with a focus on their physical exertion, capturing the gravity of the task at hand.
Geissler, a German engraver active in the early nineteenth century, was known for his technical proficiency in reproducing complex compositions. This work reflects the period's interest in biblical themes interpreted through the lens of classical aesthetics. The print demonstrates a high level of control, with varied hatching techniques used to model form and atmosphere. The surrounding white space of the paper allows the image to stand as a self-contained window into the narrative. This piece is suitable for those interested in historical printmaking techniques and the intersection of religious iconography with classical European landscape traditions.
