This woodblock print by Kubo Shunman is a fine example of a surimono, a genre of privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles. Shunman, a polymath active during the late Edo period, was known for his refined aesthetic and his ability to integrate calligraphy with visual imagery. This work depicts a tobacco pouch and a pipe, objects that were essential accessories for the fashionable urbanite of the time. The pouch features a decorative textile pattern, rendered with careful attention to the weave and floral motifs, while the pipe rests alongside it, suggesting a moment of quiet repose.
The composition is minimalist, placing the objects against a plain background to allow the viewer to focus on the textures and the accompanying calligraphic inscriptions.
