This surimono print by Yashima Gakutei depicts toasted mochi, a traditional Japanese rice cake associated with the New Year season. Surimono were privately commissioned woodblock prints, often produced for poetry circles, and they are characterised by their high production quality, including the use of metallic pigments and embossing. Gakutei, a student of Hokusai, was a master of this refined format.
The composition focuses on the texture and form of the toasted rice cakes resting on a lacquered tray. The artist captures the charred, uneven surfaces of the mochi with precision, contrasting the scorched dark areas against the pale, soft interior of the rice. The surrounding floral motifs, rendered in a delicate, understated style, provide a sense of seasonal context.
