A 1897 colour lithograph by Édouard Vuillard, designed as the title page for Ambroise Vollard's second album of original prints.
This colour lithograph serves as the title page for the second volume of the L'Album d'Estampes Originales, a publication commissioned by the influential art dealer Ambroise Vollard. Produced in 1897, the work reflects the aesthetic concerns of the Nabis, a group of post-impressionist artists who prioritised decorative qualities and flat planes of colour over traditional perspective.
Vuillard employs a muted, earthy palette, dominated by soft browns, creams, and a distinct patch of muted green. The composition is structured around the bold, hand-drawn typography that announces the album title. The letters appear to emerge from the background, integrated into the textured surface of the print. The artist uses a flattened spatial arrangement, typical of his interest in Japanese woodblock prints, which were a significant influence on the Nabis during this period. The decorative fence-like motif at the centre provides a rhythmic element, breaking the text and adding a sense of structure to the otherwise fluid, painterly application of ink.
As a commercial commission, the print demonstrates Vuillard's ability to balance graphic clarity with his personal artistic style. The work is not merely functional; it functions as an autonomous image that captures the atmosphere of the Parisian avant-garde scene at the turn of the century. The lithographic process allows for subtle variations in tone and texture, giving the flat areas of colour a tactile quality. This piece remains a representative example of the collaboration between Vollard and the artists of his circle, who sought to bring fine art techniques into the realm of printmaking and book design.
