A detailed 1566 engraving by Hubert Goltzius, featuring classical figures and architectural motifs from his study of Roman history.
This engraving serves as the title page for Hubert Goltzius's 1566 publication, Fasti magistratuum et triumphorvum Romanorum. Goltzius, a painter and printer based in Bruges, produced this work to document Roman history through the study of coins and marble monuments. The composition reflects the humanist interest in classical antiquity that defined the Northern Renaissance.
The print features a structured architectural frame, typical of sixteenth-century book design. At the top, a central female figure, likely representing Rome or Minerva, stands between two companions. Below this, the main text block provides the title and dedication in Latin. The lower section depicts a group of figures in various states of repose or contemplation, surrounded by discarded armour and military trophies. These elements suggest the aftermath of conflict or the weight of historical record.
Goltzius employs a precise, linear technique to define the musculature of the figures and the texture of the stone architecture. The shading is achieved through fine cross-hatching, which creates a sense of volume and depth within the two-dimensional space. The inclusion of the SPQR acronym and the specific mention of Bruges at the bottom anchors the work in both its Roman subject matter and its Flemish production context. This print is a clear example of the scholarly approach to printmaking during the period, where the visual arts were used to disseminate historical and archaeological research to a wider audience of collectors and academics.
