A detailed Mughal miniature painting depicting Timur distributing gifts, rendered in opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
This miniature painting originates from a Zafar-nama, or Book of Victories, a historical chronicle detailing the life and conquests of the Turco-Mongol conqueror Timur. Attributed to the artist Shravana, who was active within the Mughal imperial workshops during the late sixteenth century, the work reflects the synthesis of Persian artistic traditions and the observational style encouraged under the patronage of the Emperor Akbar.
The composition depicts Timur seated beneath a red canopy, overseeing the distribution of gifts presented by his grandson, the Prince of Multan. The scene is organised with a clear hierarchy: the central figure of Timur occupies the elevated platform, while courtiers, attendants, and animals are arranged in the foreground and surrounding space. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, which allows for the clear display of textiles, metalwork, and the varied garments worn by the figures.
Colour is applied with precision, using opaque pigments and gold leaf to denote the status of the participants and the luxury of the objects being exchanged. The architecture is suggested through simple lines, providing a stage for the narrative action rather than a realistic spatial environment. The inclusion of horses and a camel in the lower section adds a sense of movement and context to the royal encampment. The Persian calligraphy at the top and bottom of the page frames the image, integrating the visual narrative with the written history of the manuscript. This piece provides a window into the courtly culture of the Mughal era, where the documentation of historical events was as much an exercise in artistic refinement as it was in political record-keeping.
