A detailed reproduction of a historical ceramic tile featuring raised Arabic calligraphy and scrolling vegetal patterns in cobalt and turquoise.
This piece represents a fragment of a larger architectural frieze, likely originating from a religious or public structure within the Ilkhanid or Timurid periods of Persian history. The object displays the technical mastery of ceramic production common to the era, utilising a combination of relief moulding and underglaze painting. The primary visual element is a large-scale Arabic inscription rendered in a bold, raised script. This calligraphy is set against a dense, scrolling vegetal background, which provides a textural contrast to the smooth, elevated letters.
The colour palette relies on a classic combination of cobalt blue and turquoise, set against a cream or white ground. These pigments were standard for high-quality architectural ceramics of the period, chosen for their stability during the firing process and their visual clarity when viewed from a distance. The upper border contains a secondary, smaller band of script, which suggests the tile was positioned at eye level or slightly above, allowing viewers to read the text as part of a continuous narrative or devotional sequence.
Beyond the script, the surface is decorated with fine, swirling floral motifs that fill the negative space. This approach to surface decoration avoids empty areas, creating a sense of visual unity across the architectural surface. The relief work on the letters adds a physical dimension to the tile, catching the light and creating shadows that define the contours of the characters. Such tiles were often produced in workshops where artisans specialised in the coordination of geometry, calligraphy, and chemistry. This print captures the weathered texture of the original ceramic, preserving the historical character of the glaze and the precise execution of the calligraphic forms.
