A striking woodblock print by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo depicting a tiger in a cage, capturing a moment of tension with a rooster.
This woodblock print by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo depicts a large feline, identified in the title as a tiger, confined within a wooden enclosure. The composition is divided by the vertical bars of the cage, which create a rhythmic, geometric backdrop for the animal. The tiger is shown in a dynamic, rearing posture, its mouth open to reveal sharp teeth, while its tail curves upwards in a fluid arc. Below the beast, a rooster lies on the ground, surrounded by scattered feathers, suggesting a recent struggle or an imminent threat.
In the upper right corner, a cartouche containing Japanese calligraphy provides context for the scene, framed by decorative bamboo motifs. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of blue, ochre, and deep red to define the forms. Yoshitoyo, a student of the famous Utagawa Kuniyoshi, demonstrates the characteristic attention to line and narrative drama associated with the Utagawa school. The print reflects the fascination with exotic animals that appeared in Japanese art during the late Edo period, often based on reports or limited sightings of creatures brought to Japan by foreign traders.
The print exhibits the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clear outlines and flat areas of colour. The contrast between the rigid, dark bars of the cage and the organic, spotted pattern of the tiger's coat provides a visual tension. This work serves as an example of the genre of animal prints, which allowed artists to explore anatomy and movement within the constraints of traditional printmaking techniques. The inclusion of the rooster adds a sense of narrative urgency, moving the image beyond a simple biological study into the realm of dramatic storytelling.
