A striking 1912 Expressionist work by Franz Marc, featuring a tiger integrated into a geometric, colour-saturated environment.
Franz Marc, a founding member of the Der Blaue Reiter group, painted Tiger in 1912. This work demonstrates his interest in the spiritual essence of animals, which he viewed as more pure than the human form. The composition breaks away from traditional representation, opting instead for a geometric structure that integrates the animal into its environment.
The tiger occupies the centre of the frame, rendered in bold, golden-yellow tones. Its form is simplified into angular planes, echoing the influence of Cubism and the work of Robert Delaunay, whom Marc encountered in Paris. The surrounding space is fragmented into shards of colour, including deep greens, violets, and oranges. These shapes do not depict a specific location, but rather suggest a primal, energetic atmosphere.
Marc assigned symbolic meanings to colours throughout his career. Yellow often represented feminine joy or gentleness, while blue stood for masculine spirituality and red for violence or matter. In this piece, the interplay of these hues creates a sense of tension and movement. The tiger appears alert, its gaze fixed, yet it remains harmoniously connected to the abstract shapes that define the background. By stripping away realistic detail, Marc directs the viewer to focus on the emotional resonance of the subject. The painting reflects the artist's desire to capture the inner life of nature, moving beyond the surface appearance of the physical world. This approach remains a defining characteristic of his contribution to early twentieth-century German art.
