A study of light and shadow in a Mediterranean village, captured with the loose, expressive brushwork characteristic of British Impressionism.
James Charles, a painter associated with the New English Art Club, produced this work during a period when British artists were increasingly influenced by the plein air techniques of the French Impressionists. The painting depicts a narrow, sun-drenched alleyway, likely inspired by his travels in Southern Europe. A woman carries a basket upon her head, navigating the uneven stone path between high, pale walls that reflect the warm, Mediterranean light.
Charles employs a loose, painterly application of pigment to capture the atmospheric quality of the scene. The brushwork is rhythmic and textured, particularly in the rendering of the stone walls and the rough ground. Rather than focusing on sharp outlines, the artist prioritises the interplay of light and shadow across the surfaces. The palette is dominated by ochre, cream, and soft earth tones, which convey the heat of the day and the dusty character of the village architecture.
In the background, the indistinct figures of other villagers add a sense of daily life to the quiet thoroughfare. The composition relies on the verticality of the walls to draw the eye towards the centre, creating a sense of enclosure. This piece reflects the artist's interest in capturing transient moments of rural life, a common subject for painters of his generation who sought to move away from the rigid academic styles of the Victorian era. The work remains a fine example of the period's shift towards a more subjective and light-focused approach to painting, prioritising the sensory experience of a location over precise topographical detail.
