A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitao Masanobu depicting three women in patterned kimono along a shoreline, executed in the bijin-ga style.
This woodblock print by Kitao Masanobu, also known as the writer Santō Kyōden, captures a scene of three women positioned along a shoreline. The composition is part of a series referencing the Eight Views of Kanazawa, a traditional theme in Japanese art. Masanobu, a student of Kitao Shigemasa, was active during the late eighteenth century and gained recognition for his depictions of fashionable figures in the Edo period.
The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions characteristic of the artist's style during this period. Each woman wears a detailed kimono, with patterns that suggest the textile trends of the time. The background includes a fishing net and pine branches, which provide a sense of place while maintaining the flat, graphic quality typical of ukiyo-e prints. The artist uses a controlled line to define the folds of the garments and the delicate features of the subjects. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted pigments that have aged on the paper.
As a practitioner of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, Masanobu focuses on the grace and posture of his subjects. The interaction between the three women appears casual, suggesting a moment of conversation or observation. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied via a separate carved block. This work provides insight into the aesthetic priorities of the Edo urban culture, where the depiction of contemporary fashion and social leisure was a primary subject for artists and publishers alike. The print remains a clear example of the stylistic transition occurring in ukiyo-e during the late eighteenth century, moving toward more refined and slender figure types.
