A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Adamo Scultori, depicting three winged putti riding dolphins amidst stylized waves.
This engraving by Adamo Scultori depicts three putti interacting with dolphins, a motif frequently found in the art of the Italian Renaissance. Scultori, a member of a family of engravers from Mantua, was active in Rome during the mid-to-late sixteenth century. His work often involved the reproduction of designs by other masters, such as Giulio Romano or Michelangelo, though he also produced original compositions.
The composition features three winged figures, or putti, positioned amidst stylized waves. The central figure sits atop a dolphin, while the other two flank the creature, creating a balanced, triangular arrangement. The dolphins are rendered with a degree of decorative flair, their forms blending into the turbulent water below. The background is kept relatively simple, featuring vertical reeds that frame the scene and provide a sense of verticality to the otherwise horizontal grouping.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precise line work characteristic of Scultori. He employs a system of parallel hatching and cross-hatching to define the musculature of the putti and the texture of the dolphins. The shading is controlled, allowing for a clear distinction between the figures and the surrounding space. The overall effect is one of classical harmony, drawing upon the visual language of antiquity that was highly valued by collectors and artists of the period. This print serves as an example of the technical skill involved in sixteenth-century copperplate engraving, where the artist had to translate tonal values into a series of physical incisions on the metal plate. The work remains a clear representation of the Mannerist interest in mythological subjects and the decorative potential of the human form in motion.
