A refined surimono woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei, depicting three figures from the Han Dynasty with delicate patterns and calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Yashima Gakutei belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles. Gakutei was a master of this refined format, known for his technical precision and use of high-quality pigments. The work depicts three figures associated with the Han Dynasty, rendered with the characteristic elegance of the period. The composition balances the figures against a stippled background, which suggests a textured environment without the need for heavy outlines or deep perspective.
The figures wear robes adorned with geometric patterns, demonstrating the artist's attention to textile detail and decorative motifs. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top of the print indicates its original purpose as a collaborative piece, where visual art and literature functioned as a unified whole. Surimono prints were produced in limited numbers for a sophisticated audience, allowing for experimental printing techniques such as embossing and the application of metallic powders, which are subtly present in the original impressions of this series.
As a student of Totoya Hokkei and a follower of Katsushika Hokusai, Gakutei developed a distinct style that favoured classical themes and literary references. This print reflects the cultural climate of the Edo period, where historical narratives were frequently reinterpreted through the lens of contemporary artistic trends. The figures are positioned in a manner that suggests a quiet, scholarly exchange, typical of the intellectual pursuits celebrated in surimono culture. The muted colour palette, dominated by soft earth tones and subtle reds, maintains the understated aesthetic valued by the patrons of these private commissions. This print remains a fine example of the technical and artistic standards achieved during the height of the surimono tradition.
