A detailed eighteenth-century genre scene by Sara Troost, depicting the chaotic aftermath of a night out in a Dutch city.
Sara Troost, a Dutch artist active during the eighteenth century, produced this work as part of a series depicting the social habits of the period. The scene captures a nocturnal urban setting, likely in Amsterdam, where a group of gentlemen exits a building after an evening of socialising. The title, Those Who Could Walk, Did; The Others Fell, provides a narrative frame for the visual chaos unfolding on the pavement.
Troost employs a muted palette, typical of her gouache and watercolour studies, to render the dim light of the street. A single candle held by a woman illuminates the foreground, casting long shadows and highlighting the disarray of the figures. One man is supported by his companions, while another pair embraces in a state of inebriation. A horse-drawn carriage waits to the right, with a driver positioned atop, observing the scene with a sense of detachment. The architecture in the background provides a structured, formal contrast to the disorderly behaviour of the human subjects.
This work reflects the artist's interest in observational genre scenes. Troost was known for her ability to capture the nuances of daily life, often focusing on the domestic or social interactions of the Dutch bourgeoisie. The composition is balanced, using the carriage and the building entrance to anchor the figures within the frame. The application of gouache allows for a degree of opacity and detail that brings the textures of the period clothing, such as the waistcoats and breeches, into focus. This print offers a glimpse into the social customs of the Dutch elite, documenting the reality of eighteenth-century nightlife with a blend of humour and technical precision.
