A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Frans Ertinger depicting the mythological scene of Thetis submerging the infant Achilles in the River Styx.
This etching by Frans Ertinger depicts the classical myth of the sea nymph Thetis attempting to render her son, Achilles, invulnerable. She holds the infant by his heel, submerging him into the waters of the River Styx. The composition is framed by architectural elements, specifically two herms that flank the scene, creating a theatrical effect common in seventeenth-century printmaking. Above the central action, a bat-like creature and garlands add to the sombre, otherworldly atmosphere of the underworld.
In the background, the artist includes a distant view of a fortress and a boat crossing the river, likely representing Charon ferrying souls. At the base of the composition, the three-headed dog Cerberus lies in wait, reinforcing the setting as the entrance to Hades. Ertinger employs precise line work to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of the stone architecture. The use of light, particularly the torch held by the attendant figure, provides a directional focus that draws the eye toward the submerged child.
Ertinger was a Flemish engraver who spent much of his career in Paris. His work often involved the reproduction of classical themes and historical narratives. This print demonstrates the technical skill required for etching during the period, balancing narrative clarity with decorative framing. The scene captures a moment of high tension, contrasting the maternal act of protection with the dark, foreboding environment of the afterlife. The print serves as a fine example of how Baroque artists interpreted Greek mythology, blending human drama with symbolic iconography to convey the weight of the legend.
