This etching by Giovanni Andrea Podestà, dated 1636, reproduces the composition of Titian's famous painting, The Worship of Venus. Podestà, an Italian printmaker active in Rome, demonstrates his technical skill through the use of varied line weights to define the forms of the numerous putti that populate the scene. The work depicts a classical mythological subject where a multitude of infants, or putti, gather to offer fruit and flowers to a statue of Venus, which stands upon a pedestal to the left.
The composition is busy and energetic, reflecting the influence of the Venetian school on Roman printmaking during the seventeenth century. Podestà captures the playful nature of the figures, who are shown climbing trees, gathering fruit, and interacting with one another in a wooded setting.
