A detailed etching by Jean-François Millet depicting a woman engaged in the traditional rural task of carding wool.
This etching, titled The Wool Carder, captures a quiet moment of rural labour. Jean-François Millet, a central figure of the Barbizon School, focused his practice on the lives of peasants and the realities of agricultural work. In this composition, a woman sits in a dimly lit interior, her attention fixed on the task of carding wool. The physical act of preparing fibres for spinning is rendered with careful attention to the texture of the material and the posture of the worker.
Millet utilised the etching medium to explore light and shadow, creating a sense of volume through dense cross-hatching. The background remains largely obscured, which directs the viewer to the figure and her tools. The spinning wheel, partially visible behind her, provides context for the domestic setting. This work reflects the artist's interest in the dignity of manual labour, a theme that occupied much of his career after he moved to the village of Barbizon in 1849.
The print demonstrates the technical skill Millet applied to his graphic works. By varying the density of his lines, he achieved a tonal range that mimics the atmospheric quality of his paintings. The composition is balanced, with the seated figure forming a stable, triangular shape that anchors the scene. This print offers a glimpse into the nineteenth-century French countryside, documenting a traditional craft that was already beginning to change due to industrialisation. It is a study of concentration and the repetitive nature of domestic industry, presented with the directness that characterises Millet's approach to his subjects.
