Jean-François Millet, a central figure of the Barbizon school, focused his practice on the lives of rural labourers. In this work, he depicts two men engaged in the physical exertion of sawing a large log. The composition centres on the rhythmic, repetitive motion of their task. The man on the right stands with his legs braced, his posture conveying the weight and resistance of the wood, while his counterpart on the left leans into the cut.
Millet employs a dark, earthy palette to ground the figures within their environment. The lighting is focused, casting the workers in a manner that emphasises their physical presence rather than the surrounding forest. The brushwork is deliberate and heavy, mirroring the rugged nature of the manual labour being performed. Unlike the idealised depictions of rural life common in earlier academic painting, this work presents the raw reality of the working class.
The artist moved to Barbizon in 1849, where he began to observe the daily routines of local peasants. This painting reflects his interest in the dignity of labour and the connection between the human form and the natural world. By choosing to document such mundane, strenuous activities, Millet shifted the focus of fine art toward the social realities of his time. The figures are not portraits of specific individuals, but rather archetypes of the rural worker. The composition remains tight, drawing the viewer into the immediate space of the sawyers, forcing an engagement with the physical strain of their occupation. This piece remains a clear example of the Realist approach to subject matter, prioritising the honest representation of human effort over decorative or romanticised themes.

Artist Biography
Jean Francois Millet
Two village priests educated him in Latin and literature before he was pulled back to farm work. He eventually reached Paris, where he lived in poverty for a period, painting in a damp cellar. His first wife died of tuberculosis three years after their 1841 marriage. He later had nine children with Catherine Lemaire.
The Gleaners (1857) and The Angelus (1857-59) made him famous and controversial. Both depict peasants at work with a dignity that unnerved the bourgeoisie, who saw political radicalism in the simple act of painting agricultural labourers as worthy subjects. The Angelus became one of the most widely reproduced images in the world.
Van Gogh was obsessed with him. While in the asylum at Saint-Remy in late 1889 and early 1890, Van Gogh made twenty-one copies of Millet's paintings over three months, translating them into his own colour and brushwork. Millet died in 1875, co-founder of the Barbizon school and the painter who gave peasant life a permanent place in art.
