A detailed 1639 etching by Wenceslaus Hollar depicting King Richard II with his patron saints, based on the Wilton Diptych.
This etching by Wenceslaus Hollar reproduces the right panel of the Wilton Diptych, a late medieval devotional object. Hollar, a Bohemian printmaker who spent much of his career in England, produced this work in 1639. The composition depicts King Richard II kneeling in prayer, presented by his patron saints: John the Baptist, King Edmund the Martyr, and King Edward the Confessor. Each figure is rendered with careful attention to the heraldic details and the specific attributes associated with their identities, such as the arrow held by Edmund and the ring held by Edward.
The print demonstrates Hollar's technical precision in translating the original painted surface into the medium of etching. He captures the textures of the royal robes and the distinct facial features of the figures with fine, controlled lines. The inclusion of Latin text at the top and bottom of the frame provides historical context, identifying the subjects and the dedication to King Charles I. This work reflects the seventeenth-century interest in documenting historical artefacts and royal iconography. By preserving the visual information of the medieval original, Hollar provides a window into the artistic traditions of the English court during the late fourteenth century.
The figures are arranged in a formal, vertical composition that maintains the devotional character of the original diptych. The kneeling posture of Richard II creates a sense of humility, while the standing saints provide a protective, authoritative presence. Hollar's work is a record of a specific moment in English art history, showing how earlier religious imagery was interpreted and disseminated through the medium of print during the early modern period.
