A detailed seventeenth-century depiction of the Dutch whaling station at Smerenburg, capturing the industrial process of rendering whale oil in the Arctic.
This painting by Cornelis de Man depicts the industrial activity at Smerenburg, a Dutch whaling station located on the island of Amsterdamøya in the Svalbard archipelago. During the seventeenth century, this site functioned as a seasonal hub for the processing of bowhead whales. The composition captures the systematic nature of the operation, with figures engaged in the rendering of blubber into oil within large brick furnaces. Thick plumes of smoke rise from the chimneys, contrasting against the expansive, overcast sky typical of the Arctic region.
In the foreground, workers and merchants are shown in various states of activity. Some men attend to the furnaces, while others stand in groups, perhaps discussing the day's yield. To the left, a large whale carcass lies on the shore, awaiting processing. The presence of ships in the bay indicates the maritime connection necessary for transporting the finished oil back to the Netherlands. The palette is dominated by muted earth tones, greys, and ochres, which reflect the harsh, cold environment of the far north. De Man employs a wide perspective to encompass both the industrial infrastructure and the surrounding natural terrain, including the distant, snow-capped peaks.
This work provides a historical record of the Dutch whaling industry, documenting the labour and logistics involved in this commercial enterprise. The artist balances the depiction of human industry with the vastness of the Arctic setting. The painting avoids idealisation, presenting the refinery as a functional, rugged site of production. By focusing on the specific details of the equipment and the varied postures of the workers, de Man creates a narrative of seventeenth-century maritime commerce. The scene remains a valuable visual document of the economic activities that defined the Dutch presence in the Arctic during this period.
