Samuel Palmer produced this work during his Shoreham period, a time when he sought to capture the spiritual essence of the English countryside. The composition frames the expansive view of the Kentish valley through the heavy, dark boughs of ancient trees. This framing device creates a sense of enclosure, drawing the eye from the immediate, textured foreground into the golden, rolling fields that stretch toward the horizon.

Palmer utilised a dense application of watercolour and gouache to achieve a heightened, almost visionary quality. The palette relies on autumnal tones, with deep browns and burnt oranges dominating the foliage, contrasting against the lighter, sun-drenched plains below.
