A 1949 abstract etching by Minna Citron, featuring high-contrast gold and black tones that evoke a sense of movement and organic complexity.
Minna Citron, a significant figure in the American printmaking scene during the mid-twentieth century, produced this work in 1949. The piece reflects her transition from social realism toward the non-representational forms that defined her later career. By this period, Citron had moved away from the figurative depictions of urban life that occupied her early years, choosing instead to explore the possibilities of line, texture, and negative space through the medium of etching.
The composition is characterised by a high-contrast interplay between deep black ink and metallic gold tones. The forms are organic and suggest a dense, tangled environment, yet they remain resolutely abstract. Rather than providing a literal depiction of a forest, the work invites the viewer to engage with the rhythmic movement of the etched lines and the physical quality of the ink on paper. The surface possesses a tactile quality, typical of Citron's experimental approach to the copper plate, where she often manipulated the surface to create varying depths and tonal shifts.
This print demonstrates the artist's technical proficiency with the etching process. The balance between the solid, dark areas and the lighter, textured shapes creates a sense of movement across the frame. It is a work that rewards close inspection, as the viewer navigates the complex, interlocking shapes that suggest a path or a passage through an unseen space. Citron's work from this era is often noted for its intellectual rigour and its rejection of traditional perspective, favouring a flatter, more immediate visual experience. This specific print captures a moment of creative exploration, where the artist pushed the boundaries of her medium to create a sense of atmosphere and mystery without relying on representational imagery.
