Beskrivning
A symbolic work by Paul Sérusier, featuring women at a well rendered with flat planes of colour and simplified, rhythmic forms.
Paul Sérusier, a central figure in the Nabis group, produced this work during a period of intense exploration into synthetic painting methods. The composition depicts a group of women gathered around a well, a subject that allowed the artist to experiment with flat planes of colour and simplified forms. Rather than pursuing naturalistic representation, Sérusier prioritises the decorative arrangement of figures and the symbolic weight of the scene.
The figures are rendered with a deliberate lack of depth, their silhouettes defined by clear, dark outlines that separate them from the background. The palette consists of muted earth tones, punctuated by the distinct red of the vessels held by the women. This choice of colour creates a rhythmic visual pattern across the canvas, drawing the eye from one figure to the next. The woman in the foreground, leaning over the water, provides a sense of movement that contrasts with the static, upright postures of her companions.
Sérusier was deeply influenced by the theories of Paul Gauguin, particularly the idea that a painting should be a subjective interpretation of nature rather than a direct copy. In this work, the artist moves away from the traditional techniques of the academy. He employs a flattened perspective and non-naturalistic colour to evoke a sense of mystery and timelessness. The scene feels removed from the specificities of daily life, existing instead in a space defined by memory and artistic intention. The heavy, dark tones and the sombre expressions of the women contribute to a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. This piece reflects the broader Nabis interest in the spiritual and decorative potential of art, where the physical world serves as a starting point for a more personal, symbolic expression.
