A 1524 etching by Dirk Vellert depicting the Vision of St. Bernard, featuring precise architectural detail and Renaissance iconography.
This etching by Dirk Vellert, dated 1524, depicts the traditional hagiographic scene of the Vision of St. Bernard. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who is seated within an architectural framework, holding the Christ Child. St. Bernard of Clairvaux kneels before them in prayer, his crozier resting against the ornate structure. Vellert, a master of the Antwerp school, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the precise handling of the burin and etching needle. The background reveals a glimpse of a distant townscape, providing a sense of spatial depth that contrasts with the highly decorated foreground.
The architectural elements are characteristic of the Northern Renaissance style, incorporating classical motifs such as arches, pilasters, and decorative friezes. These structures frame the figures, creating a sense of enclosure and intimacy. The artist pays close attention to the textures of the drapery, the stone surfaces, and the delicate foliage at the base of the scene. The date, 1524, is inscribed clearly at the top, alongside the artist's monogram, which is visible in the lower right corner. This work reflects the period's fascination with combining religious subject matter with sophisticated architectural perspective. The print is a fine example of the graphic arts produced in the Low Countries during the early sixteenth century, where printmakers often experimented with complex compositions and fine line work to achieve tonal variety. The interplay between the sacred figures and the secular, architectural environment is a hallmark of Vellert's approach to printmaking, offering a view into the aesthetic priorities of the era.
