A serene High Renaissance composition by Bernardino Luini, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and the infant Saint John the Baptist.
Bernardino Luini, a prominent figure of the Lombard school, produced this work during the height of the Italian Renaissance. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child and the young Saint John the Baptist. Luini was a devoted follower of Leonardo da Vinci, and his influence is visible in the soft modelling of the figures and the gentle sfumato technique used to blur the transitions between light and shadow.
The Virgin is dressed in traditional red and blue garments, her expression calm and maternal. She supports the Christ Child, who reaches out towards the young Saint John. The figures are positioned against a dark, rocky backdrop that opens to a distant, atmospheric view of a mountainous landscape. This contrast between the intimate foreground and the expansive, hazy distance is a hallmark of the period. The botanical details at the base of the painting, including small flowers and grasses, demonstrate the artist's attention to naturalistic observation.
Luini’s work often prioritised grace and emotional clarity. In this piece, the interaction between the two children is rendered with a sense of quiet harmony. The lighting is focused on the faces and limbs of the figures, drawing the viewer into the narrative of the scene. The painting reflects the technical standards of early sixteenth-century Milanese art, where the legacy of Leonardo was adapted into a more accessible and sentimental style. This museum-grade print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original oil painting, preserving the delicate balance of the composition and the soft, diffused light that defines Luini’s approach to religious subjects.
