A High Renaissance altarpiece by Fra Bartolomeo, depicting the Virgin and Child in a classical architectural setting with saints and a donor.
Fra Bartolomeo, a Dominican friar and painter, completed this work in 1512 for the Carondelet chapel in Besançon Cathedral. The composition follows the sacra conversazione format, where the Virgin and Child occupy a central, elevated position, surrounded by saints and donors. The artist employs a pyramidal structure to organise the figures, creating a sense of stability and order characteristic of the High Renaissance.
To the left, Saint Sebastian stands with arrows, accompanied by Saint John the Baptist. On the right, the donor, Ferry Carondelet, kneels in his red robes, presented by Saint Stephen. The figures are arranged within a classical architectural setting, which opens at the centre to reveal a small, detailed view of a distant landscape. This inclusion of a secondary scene provides a contrast to the monumental scale of the primary figures.
Fra Bartolomeo demonstrates a mastery of light and shadow, using soft transitions to model the forms of the figures. The colour palette is balanced, with the deep blue of the Virgin's mantle and the bright red of the donor's vestments providing visual anchors. The presence of putti, some playing musical instruments and others supporting the central group, adds a sense of movement to the otherwise static arrangement. The painting reflects the influence of Leonardo da Vinci, particularly in the sfumato technique used to soften the edges of the figures and integrate them into the surrounding space. This work remains a representative example of the artist's ability to combine theological narrative with technical precision.
