A Venetian Rococo ink and wash drawing depicting the Virgin and Child bestowing the rosary upon Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena.
This work by Francesco Fontebasso captures a traditional devotional scene rendered with the fluid, light-handed technique characteristic of the Venetian Rococo. The composition is divided into two distinct registers: the celestial realm above, where the Virgin and Child are enthroned upon clouds, and the terrestrial realm below, occupied by Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena.
Fontebasso employs a delicate use of wash to define the figures and the atmospheric space. The Virgin extends the rosary towards the saints, a gesture that serves as the narrative centre of the piece. Saint Dominic, positioned on the left, gestures upwards with an expression of reverence, while Saint Catherine kneels in prayer on the right. The inclusion of a small dog holding a torch at the base is a specific iconographic reference to the legend of Saint Dominic, where his mother dreamt of a dog carrying a flaming torch to illuminate the world.
The drawing demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex groupings within an arched frame. The figures are arranged with a sense of movement, typical of the period, where drapery folds and cloud formations create a rhythmic flow across the page. The use of ink and wash allows for subtle gradations of light, giving the figures a sense of volume despite the economy of the medium. This study reflects the broader practice of Venetian artists who produced preparatory works for larger altarpieces or decorative commissions. The lightness of touch and the expressive quality of the faces demonstrate the influence of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, under whom Fontebasso studied. The work remains a clear example of the graphic traditions in eighteenth-century Venice, where the sketch was valued for its immediacy and compositional clarity.
