Painted in 1884, this work captures the rugged terrain of the Italian Riviera near Bordighera. Claude Monet travelled to this region during the winter months, seeking the intense Mediterranean light that differed significantly from the atmospheric conditions of Northern France. The composition focuses on the dry, stony bed of the Nervia river in the foreground, leading the eye towards the distant, snow-capped peaks of the Maritime Alps.
Monet employs a palette dominated by cool blues, purples, and pale ochres to define the mountain slopes. The brushwork is characteristic of his mid-career style: rapid, rhythmic strokes that build form through colour rather than rigid outlines.
