Beskrivning
A nineteenth-century watercolour by David Cox depicting cattle crossing a river in the Vale of Dolwyddelan, North Wales. This work features the loose brushwork and atmospheric light typical of the artist's late style.
David Cox was a leading figure of the Birmingham School and the English watercolour movement. This work depicts the Vale of Dolwyddelan in North Wales. Cox visited this region annually between 1844 and 1856, often staying at the Royal Oak Inn in Betws-y-Coed. The composition features a group of cattle wading through a shallow, rocky riverbed, likely the River Lledr. In the background, the rugged peaks of the Snowdonia range rise against a pale, expansive sky.
The technique used here is specific to the artist's later style. He often used a rough, textured paper known as Scotch paper, which was originally intended for wrapping parcels. This heavy, absorbent material allowed him to apply wet washes that dried with a grainy, mottled effect. The brushwork is loose and gestural. He avoids precise outlines. Instead, he uses broad washes and dabs of colour to suggest form and movement. The sky is rendered with rapid strokes of blue and white to capture the shifting light of the Welsh weather.
Cox was interested in the relationship between the rural population and the environment. The inclusion of the cattle and the distant figures provides a sense of scale within the mountain terrain. This watercolour shows the transition from topographical traditions to a more expressive approach to nature. It reflects the artist's preference for the damp, breezy conditions of the Welsh valleys. His work in this period moved away from the detailed finish expected by contemporary critics. He focused instead on the immediate sensation of being outdoors. This approach influenced later generations of British painters who sought to capture atmospheric effects over literal detail.
