A traditional Japanese handscroll painting by Kano Shōun, depicting zodiac animals dressed as classical poets in a refined, anthropomorphic style.
This work belongs to the genre of mitate-e, or parody pictures, which were popular during the Edo period in Japan. Kano Shōun depicts members of the twelve zodiac animals dressed in the formal attire of classical poets. This specific section of the handscroll features two figures, likely representing the goat and the rat, seated in a meditative or scholarly posture. The animals are rendered with careful attention to their fur and facial features, while their clothing reflects the traditional robes worn by historical Japanese literary figures.
The composition is sparse, typical of the handscroll format, which allows the viewer to observe the figures in sequence. The background remains largely unadorned, drawing focus to the figures and the accompanying calligraphy. The calligraphy above each animal provides context, linking the visual representation to the literary tradition of the Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry. By placing these animals in the roles of esteemed poets, the artist engages in a playful subversion of high culture, a common theme in Japanese art of this era.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on the natural tone of the paper and the deep blue of the goat's robe to create visual interest. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the training of the Kano school, which balanced decorative appeal with technical discipline. This print captures a moment of quiet contemplation, blending the mythological significance of the zodiac with the human pursuit of poetry. It is a fine example of how traditional Japanese art utilised humour and allegory to comment on social and cultural hierarchies, presenting a whimsical yet technically refined perspective on the animal kingdom.
