A study for a tapestry series, this work depicts the biblical procession of Mordecai through the streets of Susa, rendered in the fluid style of the French Rococo.
Jean François de Troy, a prominent figure in the French Rococo period, produced this work as a preparatory sketch for a larger tapestry series depicting the story of Esther. The narrative follows the biblical account of Mordecai, who is honoured by King Ahasuerus and paraded through the streets of Susa. De Troy captures the theatricality of the scene, employing a palette of warm ochres, deep blues, and soft greys to define the figures against an architectural backdrop.
The composition is organised to guide the viewer across the canvas, from the central figure of Mordecai mounted on a white horse to the surrounding crowd of onlookers and soldiers. The artist uses fluid brushwork to suggest movement and texture, particularly in the drapery of the garments and the musculature of the horses. The architectural elements, including the classical arches and distant pyramid, provide a sense of scale and historical setting, typical of the period's interest in exoticised antiquity.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex multi-figure compositions, a skill that earned him the position of director of the French Academy in Rome. The light is handled with a soft, diffused quality, typical of his later career, which avoids harsh contrasts in favour of a balanced, painterly atmosphere. The scene is not merely a static depiction but a dynamic record of a public procession, capturing the tension and pageantry of the biblical event. As a study for a larger decorative project, the work retains a sense of immediacy and spontaneity that is often lost in finished, large-scale commissions. It remains a fine example of the narrative capabilities of French painting during the mid-eighteenth century.
