The Trinity - Hendrik van Balen

A refined Flemish Baroque depiction of the Holy Trinity, featuring God the Father supporting Christ, surrounded by a celestial host of angels.

Hendrik van Balen, a prominent figure in the Antwerp school, produced this depiction of the Holy Trinity during the height of the Flemish Baroque period. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the Throne of Grace, where God the Father supports the body of the crucified Christ, while the Holy Spirit, represented as a dove, descends from above. Van Balen, who served as a teacher to Anthony van Dyck, demonstrates his mastery of small-scale cabinet paintings, a format for which he was widely recognised. The use of copper as a support allows for a smooth surface, enabling the artist to achieve a high degree of detail and luminosity in the pigments.

The scene is crowded with a celestial host of angels and putti, arranged in a semi-circular formation that draws the eye towards the central figures. The Father is depicted in papal vestments, wearing a tiara, which reflects the theological conventions of the Counter-Reformation era. His expression is one of solemnity, mirroring the gravity of the sacrifice of his son. The angels surrounding the central group are engaged in acts of devotion, holding instruments of the Passion or swinging censers, which adds a sense of movement and ritual to the composition.

Van Balen employs a palette dominated by deep reds, golds, and soft blues, creating a contrast between the earthly suffering of Christ and the heavenly realm. The lighting is focused on the central figures, creating a soft glow that emanates from the dove of the Holy Spirit. This work is characteristic of the artist's ability to balance complex theological narratives with a refined, decorative aesthetic. The figures are rendered with anatomical precision, typical of the training provided within the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp. This piece remains a clear example of the devotional art produced for private collectors during the early seventeenth century.
