A late fourteenth-century tempera painting by Agnolo Gaddi depicting the Throne of Grace, featuring God the Father supporting the crucified Christ.
Agnolo Gaddi, a painter active in Florence during the late fourteenth century, produced this depiction of the Holy Trinity. The composition follows the iconographic tradition known as the Throne of Grace, where God the Father supports the cross upon which Christ is crucified. The Holy Spirit, represented as a dove, descends between them. This arrangement emphasises the theological connection between the figures.
Gaddi employs the stylistic conventions of the Late Gothic period. The figures are rendered with a focus on linear clarity and symbolic weight rather than anatomical realism. God the Father is depicted as a majestic, enthroned figure, draped in heavy robes with gold-trimmed edges. His expression is solemn, reflecting the gravity of the subject. The figure of Christ is smaller in scale, suspended against the backdrop of the Father's mantle. At the base of the cross, a skull rests upon the ground, a traditional memento mori symbolising the site of Golgotha and the triumph over death.
The use of gold leaf in the background creates a flat, ethereal space, typical of the period's devotional art. The colour palette relies on muted tones, punctuated by the deep black of the Father's cloak and the pale flesh tones of the figures. Gaddi was a member of a prominent family of artists, and his work reflects the transition from the influence of Giotto toward the more decorative tendencies of the late Trecento. This piece demonstrates the technical precision of tempera painting, with fine details visible in the halos and the embroidered hems of the garments. The arched top of the panel suggests its original placement within a larger altarpiece structure, intended for a chapel or private devotional setting.
