The Tightrope Walkers is a drypoint etching from the 1921 portfolio titled Jahrmarkt (Annual Fair). Max Beckmann, a central figure in the German Expressionist movement, utilised the circus as a recurring motif to explore the human condition. In this composition, the figures occupy a precarious space, suspended above a fairground scene. The tightrope walker on the left balances with a parasol, while the hooded figure on the right navigates the wire with a long pole. The background features a Ferris wheel and small structures, rendered with a sense of compressed perspective that pushes the subjects to the foreground.
Beckmann employs sharp, angular lines and a stark contrast between the dark ink and the paper surface. The figures appear distorted, a common stylistic choice in his work to convey psychological tension. The striped costume of the performer and the heavy, shroud-like garment of the second figure create a visual rhythm that draws the eye across the wire. The crescent moon in the upper right adds a nocturnal quality to the scene, suggesting a world that exists outside of ordinary time. Max Beckmann
Beckmann was dismissed from his teaching post in Frankfurt the day after Hitler's 1937 speech denouncing "degenerate art". He left Germany that same evening and did not return. The speed of the departure, one speech, one night, one exile, defined the rest of his life.
He was born in Leipzig in 1884 and trained at the Weimar Academy. His early work was relatively conventional; the First World War, where he served as a medical orderly, shattered both his style and his psychology. The paintings that followed, dense, allegorical, packed with symbolic figures in compressed, claustrophobic spaces, resist easy classification. His monumental triptychs, painted in exile in Amsterdam and later St Louis, combine mythology, autobiography and contemporary history.
He remains one of the twentieth century's most ambitious figurative painters, comparable in scale and intention to Picasso but less interested in formal innovation than in moral weight. He died in New York in 1950, at sixty-five.
