Giorgio de Chirico painted The Terrible Games in 1925, a period when his work moved away from the stark, empty piazzas of his earlier Metaphysical phase towards more complex, claustrophobic arrangements. The composition features a seated, faceless mannequin, a recurring motif in his oeuvre that suggests a sense of alienation and the uncanny. This figure holds a collection of geometric blocks and architectural fragments, which appear as a miniature, chaotic city or a child's toy set. The juxtaposition of these solid, colourful forms against the muted, draped robes of the figure creates a tension between the organic and the constructed.
The background consists of simplified architectural elements, including a column and building facades, which provide a sense of stage-like depth. The lighting is artificial and theatrical, casting long shadows that do not align with a natural sun source.
