Beskrivning
A study of light and enclosure, this work by Edouard Vuillard captures a quiet outdoor scene through his signature decorative, Post-Impressionist style.
Edouard Vuillard, a central figure of the Nabis group, is recognised for his ability to transform domestic and outdoor scenes into atmospheric studies of colour and form. In this work, the artist captures a quiet moment beneath a canopy, where the structure of the tent frames the figures seated within. The composition relies on the interplay between the shaded interior and the glimpses of the exterior environment, creating a sense of enclosure that is characteristic of his approach to private life.
Vuillard often utilised cardboard as a support, allowing the matte texture of the material to influence the application of his paint. His technique involves short, rhythmic brushstrokes that build up the surface, prioritising the decorative quality of the scene over precise anatomical detail. The figures are integrated into the surrounding environment, their forms merging with the furniture and the fabric of the tent. This flattening of space is a hallmark of his style, influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and the Nabis interest in surface pattern.
By focusing on the mundane, Vuillard invites the viewer to observe the subtle shifts in light and shadow that define a space. The palette is composed of earthy tones, punctuated by cooler blues and warmer ochres, which suggest the dappled light of a garden setting. The tent acts as a threshold, separating the public world from the intimate gathering of the individuals depicted. This work provides an example of how the artist manipulated perspective to create a sense of psychological depth, despite the apparent simplicity of the subject matter. The lack of rigid boundaries between the subjects and their surroundings encourages a focus on the overall mood of the scene, rather than a narrative interpretation of the event.

The Tent - Edouard Vuillard
Artist Biography
Edouard Vuillard
He joined the Nabis in the early 1890s, a group of young painters who took their name from the Hebrew word for prophets. The others (Bonnard, Denis, Serusier) were drawn to mysticism and esoteric philosophy. Vuillard was drawn to the interior. His mother's workroom, with its bolts of fabric, wallpaper patterns, and women in patterned dresses, became his subject. The paintings flatten space: the figure merges with the wallpaper, the dress dissolves into the upholstery, the room becomes a single surface of competing patterns. Critics called the approach Intimism.
He painted almost exclusively domestic scenes: rooms, tables, women sewing, women reading. The scale is modest. The colours are muted. There is no drama, no allegory, no mythology. The work assumes that a woman sitting in a chair in a room with good light is enough to make a painting, which it is.
He never married. He lived with his mother until she died and then lived alone. In the late twentieth century, historians began to reassess his decorative work (screens, murals, theatre sets for Lugne-Poe's Theatre de l'Oeuvre) and recognised that the small domestic paintings were not minor work but a deliberate programme: the interior as a subject equal to landscape or history.
